Mountain biking has steadily grown in popularity during the past decade, but it leapfrogged over other outdoor hobbies when working remotely became more accepted and accessible. The small town of Robertson boasts some of the best mountain bike routes in the Western Cape as its dedicated mountain bike trails were built with a variety of mountain bikers in mind and are truly special.
Where can I cycle in Robertson?
As with most of the mountain bike trails out this way, the Van Loveren MTB is located about 15 minutes out of the town. You can find us along the R317.
Furthermore, the Van Loveren MTB trail is part of the Wine Lands Regional trail permit including 17 trail networks spanning nearly 1300 kilometres of trails.
What do I need to cycle at Van Loveren?
Upon entering Van Loveren, you will need to secure your MTB permit from the Tasting Room, unless you have a Wine Lands Regional trail permit. Java MTB
This Van Loveren MTB trail has three options that cater for all riders: from our weekend warriors to the almost-elites.
Java MTB 12km Yellow Route
This mountain bike trail contains just 12km of Jeep track with only 200m elevation. A great casual jaunt for the family that ends at Christina’s Bistro where you can try their chocolate ganache milkshakes which makes an excellent recovery drink.
Java MTB 21km Red Route
This route is slightly more challenging and includes about 3km of single track. It suits an intermediate rider that knows bike and body fairly well. It boasts 350m elevation and some spectacular scenic views.
Java MTB 32km Blue Route
This bike trail is for those who have been riding MTB for a while. With 550m elevation and a fair bit of single track, riders will need to pack some sports drink and snacks and will probably need to take a nap that afternoon!
Java MTB Annual Event
The annual Java MTB event uses some of the same mountain bike trails but sections are added and each year slightly different paths are chosen to keep it fresh for the competitors. There is a 20km, 45km and 65km option. This event raises thousands of Rands each year for local schools in the Robertson area. It really showcases the heart of our Van Loveren family.
